National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme is an Indian Government sector public service program conducted by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of Government of India, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year in 1969. It provides opportunity to the student youth of India to take part in various government led community service activities and programmes.

At GCR 5 NSS units recruit around 500 NSS Volunteers every year. The volunteers get opportunities to participate and actively contribute towards various drives and initiatives taken by the NSS units. During the session 2020-21 the NSS (Girls wing) Akriti Sharma was selected for the prestigious Pre–Republic Day (PRD) camp and participated in Republic day Parade.

Motto of NSS: "Not Me, But You"

Objectives of NSS: To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility. Vision: To build the youth with the mind and spirit to serve the society and work for the social upliftment of the down-trodden masses of the nation.

Mission: It is to improve the youth to serve the society and nation and to promote education through community service. Further it identifies the needs and problems of community and finding solution with intent to promote national integration and social harmony.

Components of NSS:

NSS Programme Officer, NSS Volunteer and Community are considered the three basic components of the NSS.

  • NSS Programme Officer is a member of the teaching faculty who provides necessary leadership to the NSS students.
  • NSS Volunteer is a self motivated college student.
  • Community provides NSS volunteer the first-hand knowledge of living conditions of masses.

Classification of NSS Activities:

NSS activities have been divided in two major groups. These are regular NSS activities and special camping programmes.

  • Regular NSS Activity: Under this, students engaged in various programmes in the college campus. NSS unit organizes visits to Adopted Villageand Old age homes during week-ends or after college hours is another activity performed by NSS Volunteers. Further, Dramas and Nukkad Natak are also performed by Volunteers to spread awareness on various burning issues. Activities performed by NSS UNIT are as follow:
  • Camps are organized by NSS Units in which lectures are delivered on various topics like health and hygiene, cleanliness, traffic rules, rights of women etc. NSS units undertake activities that create social awareness and generate a sense of responsibility among the students. Each year the volunteers work tirelessly for the betterment and upliftment of people in seven days and one day camps they.
  • Lectures are organized by NSS unit for women folk enlightening them about Constitutional Rights of Women, thus empowering the students in the process.
  • Information is provided on topics like female foeticide, dowry, gender discrimination etc which makes the students aware and ready to cope up with the realities of life. Lectures are also delivered on topics like health and hygiene, traffic rules, organic farming, sanitation etc.
  • Independence Day celebrations and Republic Day celebrations are a regular feature.
  • Every year on 20th August, Sadbhavana Diwas , the birthday of late Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi is celebrated.
  • On Van Mahotsava, the students plant trees on the college campus and also promise to nurture them.
  • NSS volunteers undertake Cleanliness Drives on the campus every year.
  • Seven day camp is the regular feature of NSS unit of the college.
  • Special Camping Programme: Under this, camps of 7 days duration are organized in adopted villages or college campus during vacation with some specific projects by involving local communities. 50% NSS volunteers are expected to participate in these camps.

Terms of NSS:

Under the NSS Programme any student of the college can opt for NSS provided she is not enrolled in NCC. Volunteers are required to render service for a minimum 120 hours per year under regular activities and are also required to participate in at least one 7 day special camping programme every year. The Special Camping Programme will be treated as separate project and the hours of work put in those programmes will be accounted separately and they will not be included in the 120 hours of normal NSS activities. A, B and C certificates are earned by the students after the completion of first, second and third year of service, respectively

The chief speaker of the seminar, Swaran Singh Bhangu, took inspiration from the life of Sardar Bhagat Singh ji and inspired the youth to deal with the current situations and develop feelings of patriotism. He also appealed to the students to read and consider the writings of Sardar Bhagat Singh

12-01-2023 Seminar on road safety on the occasion of National Youth Day NSS Programme Officers None 6 50 In this seminar students were made aware about the importance of road safety rules for human life and how globally, more lives are being lost in road accidents compared to people dying from diseases, the only mantra that can save these lost lives is caution and adherence to road rules. On this occasion, under the aim of creating awareness about road safety, Dr. Trivedi's PPT and video were shown. Along with this, road safety anthem was also shown.

16-09-2023 Awareness rally under Swachhta Hi Seva campaign NSS Programme Officers NCC 15 250 NSS Volunteers and NCC cadets went to different places in the city to create awareness about the cleanliness drive and also distributed pamphlets about prevention and diet against dengue. Under Swachhta Hi Seva Abhiyan, awareness rally, cleanliness pledge, seminar on waste management techniques, speech competition on the negative effects of pollution, debate, seminar and cleanliness song competitions were also organized.

25-01-2024 National Voters Day Dr. Preeti Yadav, DC Rupnagar District Administration, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Red Ribbon Club, Red Cross Unit, NCC, Electoral Literacy Club 30 500 Volunteers were motivated to make a vote and use it wisely. The history and importance of National Voter's Day was also highlighted. Mini Youth Parliament was also organised.

 23-3-2024 Tribute to Shaheed-e-Azam S. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on the occasion of Sahidi Day NSS Programme Officers NSS, NCC 12 70 Volunteers were motivated to remember the sacrifices of the martyrs and work in the interest of the country to realize their dreams.
